Just play a video of your golf swing as you’re walking on stage. Be sure to let the roar die down before you jump in with your first joke.

You’ll pay for this.

I find comedians the funniest when they just seem like themselves - no airs, no over-the-top foolishness. You have a dry, droll sense of humor in your columns and I believe that will serve you well in performance. If they don't laugh, just give them that look you see other comedians give. Also, if you have to swear a lot to be funny, it's likely you're not funny (McAfee not withstanding). Best wishes for an awesome gig!

Consider using: “ I Googled “ways to memorize material” last night and forgot it all the next morning.” in one of your future gigs. That simple humor made me laugh when I read it.

Wow. Wouldn't it be easier to sing the National Anthem at some game? Funny isn't easy, especially on purpose. Little known fact: After John Madden retired from coaching and before he upramped his TV broadcasting career, he considered doing standup comedy. I went with him to shows, including to see Rodney Dangerfield a couple of times. Madden liked Dangerfield. We visited backstage and Dangerfield told Madden he would be a natural. Big man with great hand gestures and good timing already. But Madden couldn't quite get himself up there, not even in a small club. So he settled for football broadcasting. Your turn Kravitz. Remember, you'll still have substack.

Fascinating. I had no idea.

Bob, I’m doing an open mic night in about a month. It’s my first time and I have to do 6 mins. I’m doing it for similar reasons you are, I want to put myself out there, I love comedy, and think it’d be fun to try. I’m excited and terrified.

Bob Kravitz's avatar

So am I. Mortified.

Way to go Bob. My wife and I are a tad younger (turning 61 this year) and I think I am too old to try new tricks. Hope you post your video or at least a transcript. If they can bring back Mora's "Playoffs, playoffs?" bit for a SB commercial, I am sure you can land some good comedy punches. Good Luck!!

If this ends up on YouTube, I want a link!

Proud that you are taking the leap. You have plenty of material from your years of covering lots of fun and interesting subjects. And I think you are in the Bob Newhart mold.

Look forward to seeing your performance. A sense of humor is near the top of my traits appreciation, and your writings have always had that underlying grin going on.

Let err rip!

Way to go Doctor! No doubt you have many years worth of material to unload on your audience! Wish I could be there for this event! Break a Leg...Mozel Tav!

Wow, Bob! You are being so darned brave. It's not easy to do, but all your readers will be "virtually" cheering you on.

Appreciate it Becky.

Break a leg as they say. I hope it goes well.

I anticipate you’ll do equally as well if not better than Canadian Murray Langston who was AKA “The Unknown Comic” circa 1970’s on the Chuck Barris “Gong Show”. Perhaps you can repurpose a brown paper bag as a mask.

Definitely want to be in the live audience. You need a golf buddy or two that have seen your net double bogeys!

You can actually buy tickets. It’s March 6 at 830. I don’t know how many invites I will get so it might be a good idea to get ‘em soon.

Hey Bob, can we locals come watch?

Good for you Bob. Nice to have a unique focus in life once in awhile.
