Really good read, as usual, Bob. I guess my only issue here is Myles' May 8th entry over at the Players' Tribune. To write something like that, only to turn around two months later and not give the Pacers a chance to counter-offer ... it makes those words ring hollow, no? The dichotomy of that piece compared to his actions (or his agent's actions) is hard to reconcile.

Player’s Tribune is a lot of navel gazing that has gotten ridiculous over the years. I wonder if the athlete is really writing or just talking to a professional author/ghost writer.

Doesn't it feel like a bullet dodged? I mean if you still had the entire roster and were trying to make a repeat run next season, that would be one thing, but that is not reality. The fact is that this next season is essentially an experiment season to see what you can get from the other pieces you currently have and what you may need to modify for the following season.

I appreciate Myles and how he represented the team and city over the past decade, but he is essentially a known commodity at this point. This isn't intended as an attack, but he's not getting significantly better between now and the season after next. The options they are going to run with now at the 5 spot have an opportunity. We'll see who is worth keeping on the roster.

Folks can say what they want about the leadership of teams in Indy, but the fact is that Pritchard has more than a sufficient history demonstrating his ability to make deals that help the franchise. They may be more chess-type of moves than checkers with an eye towards moves down the road, but it's difficult to identify many times where his decisions have set his team back (TJ Leaf maybe being the biggest miss, but it's not like there was a franchise-altering player drafted after him), much less hand-cuffed it to a negative situation.

Pritchard can say all the right things about Myles (and his representation) right now, but I find it hard to believe that he would have financially strapped the team's future to a player who couldn't consistently fulfill the 3rd or 4th offensive option, much less the 2nd option that he is now supposedly signed up for. Good for Turner, but also good for the Pacers. Again, not intended as a shot at Turner, simply the reality of the situation and how this team needs to prepare if wanting another shot at a Finals run at some point in the near future.

Great article! I'm torn on his departure. Overall I agree with your last article that we don't get there to the finals without Myles, but he was a no show in the finals. If he had played like a ten year veteran and gave us one good game maybe we win in 6. I don't blame him for leaving or the Pacers offering whatever they did. I for one will cheer for him when he comes back. This is not a Victor or a George kind of departure in my opinion. It would be a little funny if Giannis demands a trade out of Milwaukee.

About so much than “taking the money and running.” Seems like the fan base both embraced Myles for 10 years AND were also secretly geeked to flip him for something better at the trade deadline for damn near his entire career. Combine that with the Ayton saga a couple years ago and I cannot blame Myles for jumping at the chance to go to a team that moved heaven and earth (and over $100M!!) to secure his services.

And sometimes, well, you need a change of scenery. Ten years is a sneaky long time to stay in one place in any position and him wanting to sniff around for a second chapter is not only logical, but natural.

For the years he gave and, above all, the character he displayed along the way, he deserves one hell of an ovation the first time he comes back. After that, sure, boo him all you want!

Myles is such a stand-up dude. My favorite Pacer. Had to endure trade rumors every year. Best wishes for the rest of your career.

Can you explain what Milwaukee would have gotten out of a sign and trade? I don’t really understand it. And if it benefits both teams, why didn’t they do it?

They did this with Brogdon when they got him from Milwaukee a few years back. The way it’s been described to me, this is a giant FU by the bucks to the pacers.

This is definitely my understanding too. The Bucks refusing to do a sign and trade is them trying to be as punitive as possible to the Pacers. I like Myles but I’m really rooting hard for this not to work out for the Bucks and Giannis pushes to leave next year anyway and they remain in salary purgatory for half a decade.

Myles definitely WLL and SHOULD be booed first visit. 10 years is all well and good but what have you done for us lately? Fleeced the franchise and joined the enemy. Sorry, not sorry.
