One week later, the Richardson benching still makes no real sense at all
I'm rooting for Joe Flacco. Great guy, terrific pro. But the Flacco Magic has an expiration date. The Colts are spinning their wheels, wasting our time. Free AR.
I must concede, given everything that has been going on in our country the last 48 hours, I’ve had an exceedingly difficult time tearing myself away from the TV news. I’ve had a Stephanie White column in my head for two days (she was named the Fever coach Monday) and I haven’t been able to discipline myself to sit down and write it.
Like most of you, or so I would assume, I’ve been a little bit distracted.
Somehow the Joe Flacco-Anthony Richardson issue isn’t top of mind for me in recent days.
Listen, I’d love to write a political screed -- all my thoughts these days are political – but I’m quite sure you don’t read this site for my insights on those issues. And frankly, given how polarizing this whole thing is, each side convinced that if their side loses, democracy will die in America, I didn’t want to add to the noise and push away friends who may have voted differently than me.
So I won’t.
Just had to get that off my chest.
Anyway, the Richardson-Flacco situation…
I still don’t get it. Didn’t get it from the very beginning and sure as hell don’t understand it now, not after that Minnesota game.
Every week, we play this stupid but necessary game with the eternally close-mouthed Shane Steichen, asking him who his starting quarterback is for the coming week. Every week, we try and pin him down on how long Flacco will remain the starter, especially after a performance like the one in Minneapolis. Every week, we try to get him to open up on the reasons why the organization benched Richardson, and every week, he clumsily dances around the question, sharing absolutely nothing.
Asked Wednesday why he feels comfortable with Flacco moving forward, he offered this non-answer: “He’s throwing the football. He’s done a hell of a job with that. Getting the ball out of his hands, finding completions. Just a veteran leader…”
Oh.
