They continue to mismanage the development of Richardson and there is no evidence to make me believe they can suddenly be successful at it or in building a team around him to maximize his chances for success. However, Ballard is smart enough to know that simply making the playoffs probably buys him yet another year, so we should look forward to a QB at the end of his career stepping in again for a year. Same story as always with this organization.

I’d run AR 20 times a game. He will likely get better than 47%, but he will never be able to win and take them to the playoffs by throwing.

He’s a horse, let him run. If he gets hurt, so be it. Fields sounds good, same offense can be run with either guy. Cousins sounds like Rivers/Wentz/Ryan - past their prime.

Going back three drafts, who should they have chosen at QB? Stroud was the guy…

One minor quibble Bob, back in 2021 they would have had to trade for Stafford, not just sign him. In Ballard’s defense, the Rams had something to include in their trade offer in addition to a slew of picks that Indy didn’t in Goff, a proven QB in his early prime. The Colts had no way of competing with that.

In all the years I’ve read your columns, I’ve never found myself so completely on the other side of your position. I don’t think “they” mismanaged AR, AR mismanaged himself. I don’t think they’re speaking out of both sides of their mouths, they’re genuinely interested in finding a solution to the position, and they know without a shadow of a doubt that AR is not the answer.

I do agree that both GM and Coach’s jobs are on the line. And with that I can’t believe there is any chance whatsoever that AR is the starter next season. Truthfully, what more do they need to see? He’s not it. He’s never going to be “it.” Starting AR is a guaranteed failure and firing of the coach, and (probably?) the GM.

How about the Colts draft a QB in a mid round? I think Will Howard or Dillon Gabriel would be available anywhere from the second to fourth round. They could push Richardson or maybe even pull a Brock Purdy. Yes, this would probably mean goodbye to Sam Ehlinger. We would still probably go for a veteran to mentor the lockerroom. Here is what I like about both Gabriel and Howard - the pros are absolutely harder than college, but the transfer portal showed they can switch programs and be productive in the first year. Those two have an amazing work ethic. Yes, that would translate to not getting another player for that pick, but its also doubling down on the QB position which is the most important position. And its not at the cost of a first round pick.
