The Washington Post story centers on the late Jim Irsay, his addictions, his demons and the drug-fueled nightmare his later years had become.

But after several readings of the story, a fabulous piece of investigative journalism, I thought the real focus was the Colts – meaning the organization as a whole, the one that misled the public about Irsay’s condition these past few years – and the doctor, Dr. Harry Haroutunian, a noted addiction specialist based in Palm Springs, Calif., who apparently supplied Irsay with the pills and ketamine shots that contributed to his decline.

From the start, I sensed something was amiss. I had heard about the Miami overdose – a few of us in the local media did – but we weren’t able to confirm and report it. I heard that he was struggling badly, that there had been multiple overdoses since his arrest for DUI in 2014. All you had to do was look at the poor man: We’re the same age, 65, and yet, he looked 15 years older than me (and it’s not like I take great care of myself). He couldn’t get around. He was disappearing from public view for long stretches. Something was wrong, something was happening, but the Colts brass, most of whom had to sign a non-disclosure agreement, weren’t saying anything on or off the record.
