Colts lost the offseason Super Bowl -- again -- and I'm not amused
Once again, Chris Ballard made no waves in free agency; if he doesn't reach the playoffs this season, his tenure needs to come to an end
“I see we lost the offseason super bowl again…better luck next year.” Colts linebacker Zaire Franklin on X
I don’t see the humor.
Nothing against Zaire, one of the best guys on the team, but is it now a point of pride that the Colts almost never do anything significant during the free agency period? How? Why? Granted, Chris Ballard will likely add a couple of bodies as the bargains start to become available in the coming months, but for the most part, Ballard and the Colts sat this one out.
Again.
I thought this year might be different; shame on me. I thought the Colts would go off script with a quarterback on a rookie contract, would add to the wide receiver core, do something more significant than add two backups, quarterback Joe Flacco and defensive tackle Raekwon Davis. I thought Ballard would follow the form of his AFC South mates, the Jags, Texans and Titans, and surround his young quarterback (coming off shoulder surgery) with additional weapons. Didn’t we just experience the greatest salary cap percentage increase in NFL history?
And…
Nothing.
Didn’t happen.
Never does.
Give Ballard this much: He’s consistent/stubborn.
I could chuckle at Franklin’s observation if the Colts actually reached the playoffs once every blue moon, or eclipse, or whatever. No, they don’t win the offseason Super Bowl, but they don’t win in the regular season or the playoffs, either. It’s not like what Ballard is doing is working, right? This is Ballard’s eighth year as the general manager, and he has survived despite winning just one playoff game and failing to win the not-so-overwhelming AFC South.
Let’s say the Colts fail to make the playoffs yet again next season…is that the end for Ballard?
